Wilmington Sharks Rebuild Their Reading Program for Elementary School Students

PCYP Ambassador Alyson Smist, Assistant General Manager of Wilmington Sharks Baseball, is proud to announce that in 2019 the Wilmington Sharks rebuilt their Reading Program, “Read Around the Bases,” with 12 schools across New Hanover County. Since January 1, 2020 the Sharks have overwhelmingly extended their program to just under 40 schools across Pender, New Hanover and Brunswick Counties. This will positively impact nearly 4000 2nd and 3rd graders to encourage literacy and comprehension.

The Wilmington Sharks are excited to provide elementary and middle school teachers and their students the opportunity to become an All-Star reader and take part in our reading program. “Read Around the Bases” encourages literacy and reading comprehension inside and outside the classroom for traditional and non-traditional 2nd and 3rd graders.

Read Around the Bases is FREE, turn-key, incentive based and aims to help students discover the joy and rewards of reading. Students work towards reaching HOME by reading 4 books in order to receive FREE admission to a Wilmington Sharks home game on Tuesday June 9th or Wednesday June 10th – Just bring your bookmark!

Family members can get discounted tickets to this game by following instructions on the back.

In order to participate, visit the downtown branch of the New Hanover County Regional Library to pick up your bookmark, or ask your school teacher or librarian about how to get involved.
